EMPIRES & ETHNICITIES: CRITICAL PROBLEMS IN SOCIAL THEORY AND HISTORY FROM HANNAH ARENDT TO GAYATRI SPIVAK (7,5 ECTS)

The aim of this course is to investigate a series of classical encounters that have shaped Western conceptions of Otherness, ethnicity, and race. Focus is on texts from the latter half of the 20th century. Starting with Hanna Arendt’s understanding of Imperialism in The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951) and continuing with other classics ending with Gayatri Spivak’s essay ‘Can the Subalterns Speak?” (1988).

The course explores theoretical and empirical aspects of international migration, with more specific analyses of various cases. The course sheds light on migration’s multidimensional character—including the issues of migrant incorporation, multiculturalism and integration—and familiarizes students with developments at different levels (e.g. global, regional, national and local), as well as with the important interlinkages between these.

This course aims to engage students in exploring and critically analysing perspectives on citizenship, the interrelations between citizenship and migration, and different models of citizenship—post-national, cosmopolitan, trans-national, etc—beyond and below the level of the nation-state.
General information:
• The courses are offered to postgraduate students (preferably PhD students but advanced MA students are also encouraged to apply).
• Courses comprise 5 weeks of full-time work for 7,5 ECTS. Students spend one intensive week at REMESO, at Linköping University, Campus Norrköping. Courses are usually examined by a paper assignment.
